STROPPI'NG DEVICE FOR RAZOR BLADES AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 21, 1949 I N VE N TOR. M flM/zsm/ ATTOH N EYS Patented Dec. 2, 1952 STROPPING DEVICE FOR RAZOR BLADES AND THE LIKE Nils David Nilson, Huddinge, Sweden Application September 21, 1949, Serial No. 116,993
In Sweden September 24, 1947 6 Claims. 1
The present invention refers to such stropping devices for razor blades and the like which comprise a holder having swingably arranged therein a retaining contrivance or clip for the razor I blade and provided with rollers, between which astrop is intended to be introduced. The object of the invention is to provide an efficient, simple and inexpensive stropping device and razor blade used so that the holder, with the strop introduced between the rollers thereof, is moved back and forth along the strop, the razor blade being sharpened thereat by the one and the other side of the edge of the blade dragging alternately along the strop. In this connection it is important that the razor blade be quickly turned or reversed from one side of the holder to the other, when the direction of movement of the holder is altered, inasmuch as the razor blade might otherwise injure the strop. In previous constructions, to ensure :a rapid reversal of the razor blade, the rollers have been provided with toothed wheels, through which the movement of the rollers would be transmitted to the clip carrying the razor blade. These constructions are comparatively complicated and not always satisfactory in their function, because the friction in the teeth is frequently so great that the rollers, even in the proximity of the extreme positions, will slide along the strop without rolling thereon, so that the desired reversal of the clip and the razor blade is'not obtained. A still further ob- ,ject of thepresent invention is to avoid this drawback and provide for a satisfactory reversal of the clip without resorting to toothed wheels.
The above objects are obtained by the structure illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the holder when arranged on a strop, and Fig. 2 shows a corresponding elevation. Fig. 3 shows the holder in a projection at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a modification in the same manner of disclosure as Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is an edgewise view of the clip,
In the embodiment shown, the holder consists of a U-shaped yoke I, the shanks 2, 3 of which form the side pieces in which the rollers 4, 5, 6 are mounted. The rollers are provided with end journals mounted at each end in one and the same guide taking the form of a slot 1. Preferably, the guides are straight, whereby the rollers take an aligned position. The strop 8 is introthereof turned upwardly (Fig. 4).
duced between the rollers 4 and 5. The roller 6 carries the carrier or clip, in which the razor blade is retained. This clip may consist of a plate l0 secured to the roller 6 in a non-rotary manner and provided with pins ll engaging apertures in the razor blade 9. The plate may have arranged thereon a cap member l2 connected with the plate at one end thereof by means of a hinge I3 so as to permit of being swung inwardly onto the razor blade placed on the plate, in which position the cap member is locked, for instance with the aid of a resilient lip or clasp M at the other end of the cap member. The cap member I2 preferably also has apertures provided therein in register with the 'pins l l.
The yoke may have a block I5 or the like fitted into the same, which block may be formed with concave side surfaces offering a suitable finger grip. Arranged between the upper side of the block l5 and the roller 4 is a spring 16, preferably taking the form of a curved leaf spring, which engages with its end portions into the slots l in the side pieces 2, 3, Where it abuts against the end journals of the roller 4. If desired, this spring It may be placed with the concave side This spring presses the roller 4 upwardly against the strop 8 and also causes a resilient frictional engagement between the strop and the roller-5 as well as between the rollers 5 and 6. Roller 5 which is arranged for cooperation with the strop and which is in engagement with the roller 6 carrying the clip is provided with irregularities on its surface of engagement, said surface being preferably knurled to improve the engagement. As
it is in contact with abrasive applied to the strop,
it is subjected to a certain wear and should consequently consist of a relatively'resistive material, such as steel.
In order that an ordin-arystrop, which is generally provided straps or other suspending and retaining means at the ends thereof, shallpermit of being readily introduced into its place in the holder, the shanks of the yoke I are preferably resilient, so that the rollers 5 and 6 can be removed by moving the shanks apart, the roller extreme position on the strop with one edge of the razor blade resting on the strop. If the holder is now pulled toward the right, the roller 5, against which the strop 8 is pressed by the roller 4 and the spring IE, will be turned in a clockwise direction, the roller 6 with the clip being thus swung in the opposite direction, i. e. from the rright- :to .the left, so th at'ithe'" side "of the razor,:blade edge; whichi' was previously turned upwardly, will be swung down toward the strop, until it stops against the latter. the holder is then pulled further, the roller 6 is unable to turn, but owing to'the friction between When the strop and the roller 5 and between the latter and the roller 6 the roller 5 tendsiall the time-to turn the roller 6 so that the latter keeps the edge of the razor blade pressedagainst'the strop. In
the right-hand extreme position of the holder;
the rollers are turned in the opposite direction,
when the direction of movement of the holder is changed,-whereupon the edge of the razor blade is sharpened onits opposite. side.
WhatI claim is:
1. Al razorestropping .devic'e' .comprising the combination of a holder having opposite side pieces with guides, strop engaging rollers mounteddisplaceablyinsaid guides, a razorblade carrier, a further roller mounted insaid guides and carrying .\the blade carrier, and a spring actuating .the rollers to provide frictional engagement .1

4. A razor stropping device comprising a holder displaceable along the strop and having'side roller-and with the strop, =and-spring means actuatingthe rollers for further pressingsaid rollers against the strop and toward the other rollers to provide for frictional pressure engagement between the rollers and the strop.
5. A'razor-stropping device comprising a substantially U-shaped yoke having yieldable shanks :with longitudinal slots, blade attaching means mounted swingably in said yoke, mutually engaging rollers havingtheir ends mounted displaceably in said slots, one of said rollers having the blade attaching means secured thereto, a second of said rollers having 'a knurled peripheral surface in engagement with the first roller and with the strop-anda thirdof the rollers also engaging therstronand a spring actuating-therollers-to provide for said engagement between the rollers and the strop to ensure a frictional contact therebetween at reciprocation of the yoke alongthe strop.
6; A razorstropping device comprising a substantially u -shaped yoke having yieldable shanks withlongitudinalguids, mutually engaging rollershaving their endslmounted displaceably in said guides, blade attaching means comprising a plate secured to one of said: rollers anda clamp member hinged to -saidplate,--=a second of said rollers having a frictional peripheral surface in engagement with the-firstro1ler andwith the stropand a thirdrof the rollers alsofiengaging the strop, and a curved leaf spring having =itsends in thesame guides as "the'rollers and actuating the third roller=topress said roller against the strop, the stropagainst the second roller and-this latterrolleragainst the blade carrying roller. to ensure even contact pressurebetween 'therollers and the strop and between the engaging-rollers.
