This invention relates to a hand operated sanding device, the general object of the invention being to provide a block having a roller at one end thereof and clamping means at the other end thereof whereby sandpaper or the like placed on the roller can be drawn over the lower surface of the block and clamped to the end thereof to permit the sandpaper to be brought into contact with m the surface to be treated, with means for holding the roller stationary when a portion of the paper has been put in position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the device. Figure 2 is a view of the opposite side thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view. Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view. Figure 6 is a section on line 66 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Figure 1.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates a block having an enlargement 2 at one end thereof and a concaved part 3 at its other end. The enlargement 2 is formed with a substantially semi-circular recess 4, the ends of which are closed by the plates 5 which are suitably fastened to the block. One plate has a hole 6 therein to receive a pintle of a roll 7 and the other plateis formed with a slot 8 to receive the other pintle so that the roll can be readily placed in position or removed. The roll carries sandpaper or other suitable abrasive material, as shown at 9, and this paper is adapted to be passed over the outer upper edge of the enlargement and then passed over the arc-shaped end of the enlargement and over the flat lower face of the block and then passed into the concavity, where it is held by the clamping strip 10. This strip has one end hinged to one side of the block, as shown at 11, and has latch means 12 at .its other end for fastening it to the opposite side of the block. The sides of the block are formed with the finger receiving grooves 13.
A toothed wheel 14; is fastened to that pintle which passes through the slot 8 and the toothed part of a latch 15 is adapted to enum gage the wheel so as to lock the roll and the material thereon against movement after a portion of the paper has been placed in position on the block.
From the foregoing it will be seen that portions of the sandpaper or other material used with the device can be easily and quickly placed in operative position on the block so that surfaces can be sanded or otherwise treated by moving the block back and forth over the surface. When a new portion of the paper is to be brought into use, the latches 12 and 15 are moved to releasing position and the paper pulled upon so as to bring a new portion over the under face of the block and 7 the old portion can be separated from the new portion by pulling the paper over the upper edge of the clamping strip 10, which acts to sever the old portion from the new portion. The latch 15 acts to hold the roll against movement after the new portion of the paper has been pulled from the roll.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is A device of the class described, comprising an elongated block having reversely concaved ends, one end being outwardly and upwardly curved to provide a chamber and an outer rounded surface merging into the lower face of the block a roll of strip-like sandpaper in the chamber and having a portion thereof turned over the upwardly extended portion and trained about the lower face of the block and over the other concaved end, a clamp at .the-latterend to ustably. secure the stripportion 'theretoyside plates for the chamber and carried by the block, a journal for the roll of strip paper, and means for latching the journ l against rotation.
