RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Filed Dec. 29, 194:5 :s sheets-smet 1 Irgventor April 17, 1945. IJ. P'. ROSS RAZOR BLADE sHARENER Filed Dec. 29, 1943l 3 lSheets-*Sheet 2 wwm Inventor.
Upstanding blade retaining ears 25 are provided on the side edges of the plate 23. Pins 26 and 21 are xed on the plate 23.
The holder 22 further includes a clamp in the form of a plate 28. The plates 23 and 28 are adapted to receive and clamp therebetween a conventional safety razor blade 29 with the edge 30 thereof which is to be sharpened projecting outwardly from and free of the holder 22 for contact with the strop 5. The blade 29 is positioned on the plate 23 with the pin 21 projecting through said blade. from one end thereof are slots 3| which slidably receive the headed pins 2B. The plate 2s is further provided with a keyhole slot 32 which accommodates the pin 21.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the blade 29 to be sharpened is positioned on the plate 23 of the holder 22 with the pin 21 projecting upwardly therethrough; The plate 28 is then slipped into position on the pins 26 and 21 for securing the blade 29 in position in the holder. If desired, the blade may rst be honed on the element I3. The operator then grasps the upper portion of the carriage 9 which now functions as a handle and moves said carriage back and forth on the base I. When this occurs the belt I1 oscillates the shaft I4 as the direction of travel of the carriage 9 is reversed for engaging the blade 29 with the strop `5, the opposite sldesof said blade being alternately brought into contact with said strop. The construction and arrangement is such that the holder 22 trails the carriages at al1 times. As hereinbefore stated, by adjusting the tension of the belt I 1 through the medium of the nut 2I on the threaded rod I9, the pressure of the blade being'sharpened on the strop 5 may be regulated as desired. Also, the bevel of the edge 30 of the blade 29 may be controlled as desired by loosening or tightening thestrop 5.
It is believed that the many advantages of a safety razor blade hone and Sharpener constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodimentof the device is as illustrated and de- Extending into the plate 28 scribed, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A razor blade Sharpener comprising an elongated base, substantially channel-shaped in cross section,'a stropl suspended horizontally in said base, a substantially U-shaped, manually operable carriage slidable in the base and straddling the strop, a shaft journaled transversely in the carriage above the strop, a blade holder mounted on said shaft and below the transverse portion of said carriage, a pulley iixed on the shaft, and a stationary belt mounted on the base and wrapped 1 around the pulley for frictionally oscillating the shaft.
2. A razor blade Sharpener of the character described comprising an elongated base of substantially channel-shaped cross section comprising a bottom and upstanding side walls, said base being open at its ends, inturned flanges of angular cross section on the upper edges of the side walls, a flexible strop suspended horizontally under tension irl-the lower portionof the base, a manually operable, substantially U-shaped carriage slidable in the Vbase and straddling' the strop, the bight portion of said `substantially U-shaped carriage being arcuate, an abrasive element in said bight portion of the carriage for honing a. razor blade, saidV carriage including legs slidable between the flanges, a shaft journaled between the lower portions of theA legs, one end portion of the shaft projecting beneath one of the flanges, a pulley fixed on said one end portion of the shaft and engaged beneath said one flange, a, pinvon one of the legs engaged beneath the other flange, a holder on the yshaft between the legs for receiving a blade and engaging said blade with the strop, a beltA mounted longitudinally on the base beneath said one flange and wrapped around the pulley for frictionally oscillating the holder when the carriage is reciprocated on the base, and means for regulating the tension of said belt.
