SCISSOR SHARPENER REST FOR WHEEL GRINDERS Filed Feb. 24, 1949 INVENTOR JAMES V.AMENDOLA ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 21, 1951 SCISSOR SHARPENER REST FOR WHEEL GRINDERS James V. Amendola, Kenosha, Wis.
Application February 24, 1949, Serial No. 78,047
1 Claim.
My invention refers to scissors grinders, and more particularly to a scissor sharpener rest for the scissors grinder shown and described in my prior Patent No. 2,518,111 issued to me August 8, 1950.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and effective adjustable supporting track attachment for a wheel grinder, whereby my scissors grinder clamp disclosed in the above patent may be reciprocated back and forth against the abrading wheel to facilitate the sharp ening of scissors or shears by the ordinary layman.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come Within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of an abrading wheel and a scissors grinder attached thereto embodying the feature of my invention, the view being partly in section as indicated by line l-I of Figure 3.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the grinder having attached thereto a track rest embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a grinder wheel and track associated with my scissors grinder clamp, parts being in section as indicated by line 33 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a detail sectional elevation of the supporting rest joint, this section being indicated by line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring by characters to the drawings, A indicates a table having clamped thereto a gear housing B, the same having journaled therein an abrasive wheel C that is driven by a crank D.
The housing has extended therefrom a standard slotted ear F to which is fitted a tool rest G by means of a bolt H.
To accommodate this grinder for use in connection with my scissors grinder clamp, I provide an auxiliary track strip I, having an upturned inner flange 2 extending transversely of the wheel 3.
The track is secured by screws 33 to the upper face of the tool rest G. In order to properly adjust the track with relation to the abrading wheel, the tool rest is swung in either direction upon its pivot bolt H.
My scissors grinder, as indicated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings and more fully set forth in my prior patent 2,518,111, is then adjusted to the abrading wheel by seating the end of a guide leaf 4 into the groove of the track I.
This guide leaf 4 has hinged thereto a blade carrying leaf 5, between which leaf and a clip 6 the blade I of a pair of shears is clamped, it being understood that the hinged leaves 4 and 5 are adjusted as to their angle and locked by a set screw 1. Hence, it is apparent, in order to grind the scissors blade, the abrading wheel is put into motion, in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 1), and the scissors blade I is brought to rest upon the face of the grinder wheel while the guide leaf 4 is socketed within the groove track and thereafter by reciprocating the scissors grinder back and forth, with reference to the face of the wheel and the track I, the said blade is quickly sharpened and the sharpened beveled face of the blade is determined by adjustment with relation to the hinged leaves 4 and 5.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but what I claim as new is:
In combination with a grinding machine of the type having a housing, a grinding wheel rotatable on the housing and a slotted ear extending outwardly from the housing, of a scissor sharpener rest for slidably and rockably supporting a scissor grinder clamp including a pair of hingedly connected leaves with one leaf supporting the scissor blade and extending toward the grinding wheel comprising, a tool rest adjustably supported by the slotted ear, a supporting track strip carried by the tool rest and extending transversely across the grinding wheel, said track strip having an upturned arcuate guide flange on its forward edge adjacent the grinding wheel, the outer extremity of the upturned arcuate guide flange being inclined away from the central vertical axis of the grinding wheel forming a rounded inner seat rest, the lower edge of the other of said leaves of the scissor grinder clamp being supported on the track strip and engaging said rounded inner seat rest, whereby the scissor grinder clamp will be slidably and rockably supported by the track strip and its upturned arcuate guide flange.
