Specification of Letters Patent.

I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNETT F. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grinding-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference be ng had to the accompanying drawings, formlng part of this speclfication, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 11-11 of ig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section;
Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line IVIV of Fig. 5;
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line V-V of Fig. 4.
The object of my invention is to prov de a grinding machine having two grinding wheels mounted at different angles, together with selective driving means whereby either of said Wheels may be driven at will from a common source of power, also to provide a machine of this character which is simple in its construction and which 1s so arranged as to enable the work for which it is intended to be readily and quickly done.
80 -In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, an abrasive wheel 2 is mounted to rotate in a vertical plane. The abrasive wheel 2 is mounted on a horizontal shaft 3. On the shaft 3 is formed a pinion 4.. The
85 shaft 3 is mounted in housings 6 and 7 and is carried in suitable bearings illustrated as ball bearin s.
A secon abrasive wheel 8 is mounted to have a horizontal plane of rotation and is carried by a vertical shaft 9, inclosed in housings 10 and 11, and supported by suitable bearings. A spiral pinion 12 is formed on the grinding wheel shaft 9.
- The main drive shaft is rotatably and slidably mounted in housings 18 and 19, and is provided with a crank 20. A driving pin 21 is carried by the shaft 17 in such position that when the shaft17 is pushed in or toward the machine, the driving pin 21 will engage with a slot 22 in the hu of the gear wheel 15, to drive said gear wheel and the abrasive wheel 2. When the drive shaft 17 is pulled out or away from the machine, the drivin pin 21 engages in a slot 23 in the hub of the drive gear 16, to drive said gear andthe abrasive wheel 8. The gearing connections formed by the large gear wheels and the small pinions serve to revolve the abrasive wheels at the necessary speed for their work.
The driving pin 21 has a neutral position, as shown in Flg. 1, between the two gear wheels 15 and 16, in which it is disengaged from both gear wheels. When the drivln pin is disengaged from one gear wheel and engaged with the other, it passes through this neutral position, thus eliminating any possible chance of engaging both gears at the same time, which might damage the machine and injure the operator. While it is preferred that the driving shaft be connected as illustrated so as to selectively drive either ear, it is to be understood that the drive s aft may be otherwise connected, as per example, to drive either one or both gears at the same time.
The slots 22 and 23 are illustrated as reinforced with hardened pins 24, which take the wear of the driving pin 21.
A stud 29 is threaded to the frame of the machine and held by a lock nut 30. A tool rest 31 is mounted on a boss 32, of an arm 33, which, in turn, is mounted on a boss 34, which fits over the stud 29. By means of a screw 35, threaded in the boss 34, the tool rest may be securelyclamped in position. The stud 29 is provided with grooves 36, in which the point of the screw 35 may be tightened to more securely lock the tool rest against turning'about the stud 29. The tool rest ma be swung about the stud 29 to bring 'it in operative position adjacent either abrasive wheel. As shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the tool rest is adjacent the abrasive wheel 8, while, as shown in dotted lines, the tool rest is swung over abrasive wheel 2. A second tool rest 37 is provided for the abrasive wheel 2.
-While the preferred embodiment of my invention has been specifically illustrated and described, the invention may be embodied in other constructions of grinding machines within the scope of the following claims. I
I claim:
. 1. A grinding machine, comprising two grinding wheels and their shafts having 110 grinding wheels and their shafts having their axes extendin in different directions, pinions on the grin ing wheel shafts, a slidably mounted main drive shaft, two drive gears rotatably mounted on said shaft for driving said pinions, and means operated by sliding the drive shaft for connecting it to either one of the drive gears, substantially as described.
3. A grinding machine, comprising aslidably. moun'ted main drive shaft, two drive gears rotatably mounted on said shaft, and means for connecting the drive shaft to either one of the drive gears, two grinding wheels and their shafts, one grinding wheel shaft being parallel to the main shaft, and
the other grinding wheel shaft being at ing with one of right angles to the main drive shaft, a pinion on the first grinding wheel shaft mesht e drive gears, and a spiral pinion on the second rinding wheel drive shaft meshing with the other drive gear, substantially as described.
4. A grinding machine, comprising two grinding wheels and their shafts having their axes extending in difi'erent' directions, pinions on the grinding wheel shafts, a slidably mounted main drive shaft, two drive gears rotatably mounted on said main shaft for driving said pinions, and means including a driving pin on the shaft and sockets in the hubs of the drive gears for operatively connecting the drive shaft to either one of the drive gears by sliding the drive shaft so as to engage or disengage the sockets; substantially as described.
