Abstract
This device consist of a pair of parallel legs which are held together by bar means so that an edge of the legs will slide on top of a box holding a sharpening stone, a V-shaped knotch in the legs, serving as rest means for the blade of the knife so that it may be sharpened at correct angle for obtaining the sharpness edge.

2 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures KNIFE SHARPENER This invention relates to blade sharpening devices, and more particularly to a knife sharpener device for use with a stone.
It is therefore the principal object of this invention to provide a knife sharpener device which enable a knife to be sharpened manually while keep the blade at the correct angle for obtaining the sharpess edge thereon.
Another object of this invention is to provide a knife sharpener device which will have parallel spaced leg members which may be glided along the top of the box holding the stone, the legs being secured together by bar means which serve as handle grip means for manipulating the device while the blade is carried thereon.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sharpener device of the type described, which will have an angularly disposed edge on the legs which will terminate as a V-shaped slot, the slot serving as positioning means for the edge of the knife so as to obtain the correct angle when the device is slid over the sharpening stone.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sharpener device of the type described, of which the leg portion serve as guide means along the longitudinal sides of the stone that the knife is to be sharpened on.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a knife sharpener which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a prespective view of the present invention shown in position over a sharpening stone;
FIG. 2 is a prespective view of the device shown removed from the stone.
According to this invention, a knife sharpener 10 is shown to include a pair of parallel spaced apart legs 11 having a projection 12 between which is secured a cylindrical bar 13 by means of suitable fasteners 14.
An edge 14a of legs 11, provides for sliding engagement with the top surface 15 of the box 16 carrying the stone 17.
It shall be noted that a rubber pad 18 is secured fixedly by suitable means, at each end, to the bottom of the box 16 so as to provide frictional engagement with a surface, thus preventing movement of box 16 when sharpening a knife blade.
At the upper portion of sharpener device 10 is a V- shaped slot 19 in each of the legs 11 which in conjunction with edge 20 of legs 11, provides for the correct angular placement of the blade of the knife, so as to enable the blade edge to be at the proper angle for producing the sharpess edge possible.
It shall further be noted that the edge 20 of the legs 11, is angularly disposed to the bottom edge 14a so as to provide correct angular rest mean for the blade side.
When using, the operator places the knife so that the edge resides in the slot 19 of the legs 11. With one hand the operator grasp the bar 13 and pulls it from one end of stone 17, to the other, as the afore mentioned is being accomplished, the other hand of the user, draws the knife out of the slots 19 while simultaneously keeping the blade against the sloping edge 20 of legs 11. When the device 10 is pulled all the way to the end of stone 17, it is then pushed back to the opposite end of stone l7 and the edge of the blade is again placed in the slots 19 and the afore mentioned process is repeated.
In order to sharpen the opposite side of the blade, the process is reversed by picking upsthe device 10 and turning it around, the result being, that the same angle of bevel is placed on both sides of the blade, resulting in a smooth keen edge on the knife blade.
What I now claim is:
l. A knife sharpening device comprising:
a sharpening stone having a generally fiat top sharp ening surface and a given length and width with elongated parallel sides defining the width thereof,
support structure for supporting said stone and having a width and length greater than the width and length respectively of said stone,
said support structure being adapted to support said stone in a position to locate the sides defining the width and length of said stone inward of the sides defining the width and length of said support structure and to locate said top sharpening surface of said stone above the top surface of said support structure,
the top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone being generally parallel with each other and with the top sharpening surface of said stone,
a pair of leg members having straight bottom edges for slidably engaging the top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone,
said leg members each having first and second portions comprising a generally circular edge and a generally straight and oblique edge respectively adapted to extend above the top surface of said stone when their bottom edges engage the top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone,
said generally circular edge and said generally straight and oblique edge of each leg member meet to form a generally V-shaped groove,
said generally straight and oblique edges defining acute angles relative to lines parallel to the bottom edges of said leg members respectively,
a cylindrical member having opposite ends connected to said first portions of said leg members respectively for spacing said leg members apart in generally parallel relationship with each other,
said cylindrical member being connected to said first portions at positions to have its surface generally flush with said circular edges of said first portions of said leg members,
said cylindrical member having a length such that said leg members may straddle the width of said stone to allow the bottom edges of said leg members to slidably engage said top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone,
said cylindrical member being connected to said first portions of said leg members at positions to allow said cylindrical member to be located above the top surface of said stone whereby said leg members may be slid along the length of said top surfaces of said support member on the elongated sides of said stone to move said cylindrical member above the top surface of said stone,
said V-shaped grooves of said leg members being adapted to receive the blade edge of a knife to allow it to be sharpened by said stone,

Claims (2)
1. A knife sharpening device comprising: a sharpening stone having a generally flat top sharpening surface and a given length and width with elongated parallel sides defining the width thereof, support structure for supporting said stone and having a width and length greater than the width and length respectively of said stone, said support structure being adapted to support said stone in a position to locate the sides defining the width and length of said stone inward of the sides defining the width and length of said support structure and to locate said top sharpening surface of said stone above the top surface of said support structure, the top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone being generally parallel with each other and with the top sharpening surface of said stone, a pair of leg members having straight bottom edges for slidably engaging the top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone, said leg members each having first and second portions comprising a generally circular edge and a generally straight and oblique edge respectively adapted to extend above the top surface of said stone when their bottom edges engage the top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone, said generally circular edge and said generally straight and oblique edge of each leg member meet to form a generally Vshaped groove, said generally straight and oblique edges defining acute angles relative to lines parallel to the bottom edges of said leg members respectively, a cylindrical member having opposite ends connected to said first portions of said leg members respectively for spacing said leg members apart in generally parallel relationship with each other, said cylindrical member being connected to said first portions at positions to have its surface generally flush with said circular edges of said first portions of said leg members, said cylindrical member having a length such that said leg members may straddle the width of said stone to allow the bottom edges of said leg members to slidably engage said top surfaces of said support structure on the elongated sides of said stone, said cylindrical member being connected to said first portions of said leg members at positions to allow said cylindrical member to be located above the top surface of said stone whereby said leg members may be slid along the length of said top surfaces of said support member on the elongated sides of said stone to move said cylindrical member above the top surface of said stone, said V-shaped grooves of said leg members being adapted to receive the blade edge of a knife to allow it to be sharpened by said stone, said two leg members with said cylindrical member connected therebetween being adapted to be removed from said support structure by lifting upward and to be located in reverse positions relative to said support structure and said stone.
2. The knife sharpening device of claim 1 comprising rubber pad means located on the bottom of said support structure to provide frictional engagement with a surface when said device is used to sharpen a knife blade.
