The extremity of the base plate l remote from the upstanding web and extending transversely thereacross is an upstanding jaw plate 26, the upper portion of which is forwardly and outwardly curved, as at a, while the top edge 12, which is substantially sharp, has a longitudinal arch or how. The central portion of the plate 26 is provided with an opening 2! through which is freely inserti- Me a bolt shank 28 provided at one extremity with a head 29 for contact with the rear face of the plate 26 andalso with the upwardly facing shoulder 30 carried by said rear face of the plate 26 to hold the shank against rotation, said head 29 having a fiat edge face 0 for engagement with said shoulder 30.
- The shank 28 is of material length and is freely disposed through a central opening 3| in a movable jaw plate 32 provided at its rear outer corners with depending lugs 33 contactingirom above with the portion 34 of the base plate I disposed forwardly of the fixed jaw plate 26. This permits the sliding jaw plate 32 to have a slight rocking movement to assure the most efthe upper ends or marginal edges of the plates 26 and 32 to allow the sharpening element carried by either the member l6 or ll to have effective engagement therewith. By selectively adjusting the position of the shank 6 along the slot 5, the
angle of bevel of the action on the cutting edge of the blade of a pair of shears may be predetermined.
It is also to be pointed out that the inner upper marginal edge portion (1 of the plate 32 is longitudinally curved complemental to the longitudinal curvature of the adjacent edge 12 of the plate 26.
In practice, the blade 31 is placed within the recess 36 of the plate 32, with the outer extremity or point of the blade preferably extending about an eighth of an inch beyond a side of the plate 32. The blade is efiectively clamped in such position by requisite tightening of the winged nut N. It is to be stated that the recess 36 provides a blade support.
6 The shank 6 is adjusted along the slot 5 of the web 4 in accordance with the angle of bevel desired. The member 16 is then telescopically engaged with the rod I5 and swung down to bring the file F in contact with the cutting edge of the clamped blade of the shears. If a plain edge is desired, the filing is started from the point of the blade to the left, with a full stroke of the file. However, if a corrugated edge is desired, the file F is placed on the heel of the shears and file to the right.
When it is desired to use the oil stone S or other abrading element, the member ll is telescopically engaged with the rod l5 and in operation the stone S is pushed across the cutting edge of the blade of the shears with reasonable pressure, starting at the heel of the shears, and during the pushing action the stone S is allowed to slide toward the point of the shears. The pushing action should at all times be outward or away from the person while in contact with the blade of the shears. It is also essential that there should be plenty of oil upon the stone S and that such oil should not be heavy.
With the use of the device as herein embodied, the blades of shears may be sharpened with just a few quick strokes, with the assurance of a keen lasting edge, either plain or corrugated, and in a manner which will not injure the shears. The holding of the shears during a working operation is such as to eliminate all vibration, end play and back lash and the curved edges b and d assure effective fitting of various sizes of shears with the desired set.
The plates 26 and 32 constitute a vise for holding a shear and such plates are of such curvature to set the points of the shears so that they Will not pull at the point. When the nut N, on the shank 28 is tightened down, the plates 26 and 32 will pull the point of the shear blade around whereby it is assured the shears will out better on the point and from the point to the heel.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a sharpener for shears constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
We claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a long base member, a flat upstanding web carried by said member at one longitudinal edge and in a plane parallel with said edge, said web having a vertical slot substantially at right angles to the base member, a shank disposed through the slot, means for selectively holding the shank intermediate the ends of the slot, an elongated memher, a substantially universal connection between the elongated member and the inner end of the shank whereby said long elongated member extends across the inner face of the web, a second elongated member carried by and slidable along the first member, an abrading element carried by the second elongated member, and means for supporting the blade upon the base member on a line perpendicular to the plane of the web for engagement by the abrading element carried by the second elongated member.

A device for sharpening a cutting blade, comprising a relatively long base plate, a fixed jaw member rigid with the base plate and standing vertically thereon adjacent to one end thereof, the jaw plate having a tapered top edge forming a clamping edge, a movable jaw plate mounted upon the base plate for rocking movement relative to the fixed jaw plate and having a top edge for coaction with the tapered edge of the fixed jaw plate, means carried upon the jaw face of the movable jaw plate-forming a support for a cutting blade, said support being disposed at an inclination to the horizontal across the face of the movable jaw plate, an upstanding web extending lengthwise of one side of and carried by the base plate adjacent to the rear thereof, a ball carry- 75 the shank, a rod carried by the socket member,
