Description
Sept. 2, 1941. E. G. GEREAU SHEAR SHARPENER Filed July 23, 1940 v Inventqr Eqya/ G. Gav e44.
A tin meg- Patented Sept. 2 1941 ET S'i r carries 1 Claim.
This invention is a device to facilitate the sharpening of shears, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this character particularly designed for use by barbers in sharp ening hair cutting scissors or shears.
In accordance with the present invention means is provided whereby the shears may be conveniently held with the blade thereof to be sharpened in a position tending to facilitate the sharpening thereof, and to enable the user to obtain an edge for the blade of the shear that is most conducive to the efficient cutting action of the shear.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device illustrating the manner in which the same is employed for holding the blade of a shear for the purpose of sharpening the blade,
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the device,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the movable clamping jaw.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof th device consists of a flat oblong board 5 of any suitable dimensions, and the same is equipped at one end thereof with a clamp indicated generally by th reference numeral 6.
The clamp 6 in accordance with the present invention consists of an attaching plate 1 which is disposed flatly against the under side of the board 5 adjacent one end thereof and is secured to the board 5 through the medium of screws or other fastening elements 8.
The plate I has one edge thereof turned upwardly to provide a jaw body 9 from which extends upwardly, and at an angle to the perpendicular, a stationary narrow elongated jaw Iii.
Complementing the jaw body 9 is a movable jaw body II that has formed integral therewith and disposed at an angle thereto a jaw l2 that complements the jaw l0 and is movable toward and away from the jaw H! for coacting clamping thereof seated in a socket I4 provided in an end edge of the board 5, and a second end portion bearing against the jaw body II as shown; the jaw body 9 being provided with an opening l5 aligning with the socket l4 and through which the spring l3 extends to engage the jaw body H, as clearly shown in Figure 2.
The jaw member I2 is guided in its movements toward and away from the jaw I 0 by a pair of bolts 15 that extend through aligned openings provided therefor in the jaw bodies 9 and II as shown in Figure 4 and are equipped with thumb nuts l6, which when threaded hom on the bolts l5 serve to cause the jaw member l2 to move into clamping assOciation'With the jaw M whereby a blade of the shears may be readily clampd between the jaws i0 and I2 to be held thereby in position during the sharpening of the edge of the blade of the shear.
In Figure 1 a pair of shears is shown fragmentarily and in dotted lines and is indicated generally by the reference numeral H.
In using the device the nuts it are threaded toward the outer ends of the bolts l5 to permit the jaw l2 under action of the spring l3 to move to a position away from the jaw l0, thus permitting the selected blade of the shears I! to b positioned between the jaws I0 and I2. When this has been done, the nuts l6 are threaded home on the bolts l5 causing the jaw I2 to move towards the jaw I0 and in this manner the blade of the shears H is positively clamped between the jaws i3 and I2 to be held thereby during the employment of a file or other suitable instrument for effecting a sharpening of the cutting edge of the clamped blade.
The board 5, as is apparent, serves as a convenient support for the clamp 6 and facilitates the handling of the device.
It is also to be observed that the jaws l0 and I2 are disposed at such an angle to the perpendicular as to serve to hold the blade of the shears at that angle to the perpendicular found most effective in obtaining a bevel for the cutting edge of the shears regarded as most conducive for efiicient cutting action of the shears.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, assembly, manner ofuse and advantages of the device embodying the features of the present invention will be had without a more detailed description thereof.
It is also to be understood that while I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is no wise intended to restrict the invention to the precise details of construction combination, and arrangement of elements as described, other than as required by the prior art and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the character described, a clamp for holding the blade of a pair of shears to facilitate the sharpening thereof, said clamp comprising an elongated base having a socket in one end portion, a jaw body having an attaching plate secured to the bottom side of said base at the socketed end portion thereof, said jaw body further having openings therein one of said openings being in alignment with the socket in said base, an angularly disposed jaw extending from said jaw body, bolts extending through the other of said jaw body openings, a movable jaw body having openings therein mounted on said bolts with the bolts extending through the openings in said movable jaw body, nuts on the end portions of said bolts for moving said movable jaw body toward said first named jaw body when said nuts are fed home on the bolts, a jaw on said movable jaw body opposed to said first named jaw, and a compression spring having one end portion engaged in said socket and extending through the aligned opening in said first named jaw body with its other end portion impinged against said movable jaw body to normally urge said movable jaw body away from said first named jaw body and open said jaws when said nuts are fed outwardly on said bolts.
