SCRAPER SHARPENER.

This invention relates to sharpeners for sharpening the edges of meat block scrapers. In order tolreep a meat block clean and sanitary, it is necessary for the butcher to scrape the block at frequent intervals and if the cutting edge of the scraper us d is not straight throughoiiit its length and at right angles to the side faces of the blade the working face of the block will not be properly scraped. If the blade when sharp-- ened has its cutting edge curved longitudinally, portions of the blade will not contact with the working surface of the chopping block and, therefore, instead of the block having alevel surface when scraped it will have ridgesformed therein and dirt is liable to collect in the ridges. It is, therefore, important that the sharpener be so constructed that the blade will be slidably supported at right angles to the plane of the operating face of the sharpening element and prevented from moving out of the proper angular relation to the sharpening element while it is reciproeated longitudinally of the same.
Another object of the invention is to so form the blade holding and guiding means that the sharpener may consist of a tile and the file be very firmly held in place.
Another object of the invention is to permit the file'to be adjusted transversely of the track along which the blade is moved so that when one portion of the tile is worn out an unused portion may be brought into position for engagement'by the blade to be sharpened.
Another object (if the invention is to provide a track which may be formed of sheet metal stamped as a blank and bent to form a tile carrying base and blade supporting and guiding flanges disposed above the base and longitudinally thereof.
This invention is illustrated in the ac companying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is-a prospective view of the improved scraper sharpener, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The track which is indicated in general by the numeral 1 is carried by a support 2 preferably formed of wood. The support 2 has been shown rectangular in the drawing, but it will be understood that it may be of any shape desired and it may be formed with openings through which fasteners may pass to secure it to a counter. The track 1 taken is formed of resilient sheet metal, such as sheet steel or the like, has its base 3 resting flat upon the support 2 longitudinally thereof and secured to the support by screws 4 which pass through openings formed in its corner portions. Flanges 5 extend upwardly from the sides of the base 3 and inwardly towards each other in overhanging relation to the base and have their inner side portions bent upwardl to form guides or jaws 6 which are adapted to engage opposite side faces of the blade 7 of the sharpener indicated in general by the numeral 8. It should be noted that the flanges 5 terminate in spaced relation to the ends of the base 3 so that they do not extend over the openings throughwhich the screws 4' pass and interfere with easy applicatio'n'of the screws. This also permits the clamps 9 to extend in overlapping relation to the extended end portions of the base and engage the portions of the file 10 which project beyond the ends of the flanges. The file which is employed as a sharpener element is of materially less width than the base 3 so that when one portion of the file has become'worn the wing nuts 11 which holdthe clamps 9 in engagement with the file may be loosened and the file moved transversely of the base and thereby dispose an unused portion of the tile beneath the space between the blade engaging guides 6. Each of the clamps is formed as'a strip having its outer end portion provided with a depending foot 12 adapted to rest upon the upper face of the support 2 and its inner end portion curved to form a lip 13 to engage the upper face of the file. The threaded stems or bolts 14 which carry the wing nuts 11 extend through slots 15 formed longitudinally of the clamps so that the clamps may be adjusted transversely of the support and base and properly engage the file in order to securely hold the file in its adjusted position transversely of the base. 7
lVhen the sharpener is in use, the support 10 is placed upon a counter and secured in any desired manner so that it will be pre vented from having any movement while a scraper is being sharpened. The blade of the scraper is passed downwardly between the guides 6 and the guides engage opposite faces of the blade so that the blade is supported in a plane at right angles to the upper working face of the file, as shown in Fig. 2. After the blade of the scraper has been forced between the guides, the scraper is grasped eitherby its handle or the blade itself is grasped from opposite sides adjacent the upper edges of the guides. Reciprocating movement is imparted to the scraper longitudinally of the track and pressure applied so that the cutting edge of the blade is held in firm contact with the working face of the file. It is only necessary to reciprocate the scraper a few times with its cutting edge in engagement with the file in order to sharpen the blade. After the blade has been sharpened, the scraper is removed and it will be found that the cutting edge is straigh .1 throughout its length and is properly sharpened.
Having thus described the claim:
1. A. sharpener comprising a base and guide means extending above the ba e in spaced relation thereto and adapted to support a blade to be sharpened for movement longitudinally of the base, the base being adapted to support a sharpener oeneath the guide means for engagement by the blade with the end portions of the sharpener projecting beyond the guide means, and fasteners mounted beyond the ends of said guide means and adjustable transversely of the base for engagement with the projected end portions of a sl'larpener whereby the sharpener may be adjusted transversely of the base to dispose a selected portion of the sharpener for engagement by a blade.
2. A sharpener comprising a track including a base and guide means adapted to engage a blade and support the blade for sliding movement longitudinally of the base, a sharpening element adapted to rest upon said base and extend longitudinally thereof with its ends projecting from said guide means, said sharpening element being of materially less width than said base to permit of transverse adjustment upon the base, and fasteners adjustable transversely of said base and adapted to engage the projected ends invention, I
of said sharpening element to secure the sharpening element in a set position.
3. A sharpener comprising a support, a track carried by said support and including a base secured thereon and flanges of resilient material extending upwardly from the sides of said base, said flanges terminating short of the ends of the base and projecting inwardly in overhanging relation to the base and terminating in upwardly extending gripping portions adapted to engage and frictionally grip opposite side faces of blade to be sharpened and support the blade for sliding longitudinally of the base, a sharpening element extemling longitudinally upon said base with its ends projecting from the ends of said flanges, and means for engaging the extended end portions of said sharpening element to releasably secure the same upon said base.
A sharpener comprising a support, a. track carried by said support and including a base secured thereon and flanges along the sides of said base, said flanges terminating short of the ends of the base and projecting inwardly in overhanging relation to the base and terminating in upwardly extending gripping portions adapted to engage opposite side faces of a blade to be sharpened and support the blade for sliding longitudinally of the base, a sharpening element extending longitudinally upon said base with its end portions extending beyond the ends of said flanges, said sharpening element being adjustable transversely beneath the flanges to dispose a selected portion of the sharpening element for engagement by a blade gripped between the gripping portions of said flanges, and clamps carried by said support and extending transversely thereof and adapted to engage the end portions of the sharpening element to hold the same in a set position, said clamps being adjustable transversely of the base.
