Abstract
675,192. A.C. commutator machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 15, 1948 [Nov. 14, 1947], No. 29615/48. Addition to 675,191. Class 35. An amplidyne which can be used either as a variable speed A.C. motor or as an alternator having the E.M.F. frequency independent of speed has the quadrature component of the armature reaction produced by the circuit included in the brushes 3, 4, and the direct component of the armature reaction produced by the circuit included in the brushes 5, 6. The first circuit includes a primary 7 of a transformer 8 the secondary 9 of which is connected to a condenser 10 for tuning purposes. The second circuit includes a compensating winding 14 and the load terminals 12, 13. A third circuit includes field winding 15, a primary 16 of a transformer 17 and a control frequency source, e.g. signal generator or a tuning fork oscillator. The secondary 18 of transformer 17 is connected to a condenser 19 used as a tuning capacitance for the field control circuit. The arrows 21, 22, 23, 24 denote the direction of the axes of the fluxes produced by the quadrature armature reaction, direct armature reaction, field winding and compensating winding respectively when the amplidyne is used as an alternator and, when it is used as a motor, the direct armature reaction is additive to the field excitation instead of being in opposition.
