Abstract

In a thread-storage, thread-advancing reel having two sets of interdigitating bar members, one set being arranged offset and askew with respect to the other so that the thread is advanced in the form of a helix, the bar members of one or both sets have their thread-contacting areas reduced, e.g. by narrowing and tapering the members at the reel periphery, at the initial thread take-up end of the reel. In the form shown, the reel 114 comprises two eccentric and askew reel members 131, 132, the member 132 having the greater askew angle, so that the thread spacings at 118 on member 132 are greater than those at 119 on the member 131. The reel is driven by the shaft 116 which rotates the concentric member 130, the bars 135 of which interdigitate with those of the reel members 131, 132 arranged end to end, those of the member 132 being tapered at 133, 134. The reel is rotated at such a speed that liquid carried by the thread in the region 118 is cast off centrifugally whereas treating liquids applied at 120 form a thread-covering blanket in the region 119.
