674,794. Mixing appliances. AKTIESELSKABET DE DANSKE SUKKERFABRIKKER. Aug. 22, 1950 [Aug. 24, 1949], No. 20760/50. Class 86. Apparatus for continuously mixing together a liouid and one or more substances, under conditions in which the substance or substances are progressively added so that their concentration in the liquid increases substantially uniformly, comprises an elongated vessel along which the liquid flows with means at one or more points along its length for adding the substance or substances and stirring means for imparting transverse rotary motion to the liquid and shutters inclined in such a manner as to return some of the liquid containing a concentration of substance or substances to a zone longitudinally upstream where the concentration is relatively lower. As shown in Fig. 1, an elongated vessel 1 is provided with transverse partitions 2 forming chambers 3 to 8, in each of which chambers a set of stirring blades 10 is carried by means of a rotatable shaft 9. Above each partition is a shutter 15, which is of a length to extend substantially across the width of the vessel and which is angularly displaceable about a vertical central axis. In operation, as described in a process of liming diffusion juice obtained in the extraction of sugar beet, the diffusion juice is fed in through a pipe 18 and the treated juice is removed through an outlet 20, liming composition being continuously fed through a pipe 19. The rotation of the stirrers causes a circulation of the contents about the axis of the shaft 9 and the shutters are set at an angle such that some liquid in each chamber will be deflected back to the next chamber nearer the inlet and in this way the concentration of liming composition in the juice is caused to increase as the outlet is approached. The shutters can be employed unassociated with partitions and several relatively long vessels thus equipped may be connected in series with or without provision for liquid return between individual vessels.
