Abstract

<PICT:0413413/IV/1> <PICT:0413413/IV/2> <PICT:0413413/IV/3> Apparatus for the production, liquid-treatment, and drying of artificial silk comprises a plurality of thread carrying and transmitting devices, such as rotating cylinders, in superposed arrangement and constructed to support and advance a plurality of turns of a continuous thread, and means for subjecting the thread to one treatment while passing round one device and to other treatments on subsequent devices. The construction may be such that, at the commencement of the operation, the thread after passing round the first cylinder is automatically taken up by each subsequent cylinder. Several threads separate from each other may be simultaneously wound round the same cylinder. Treatment liquids may be returned to the supply tank for re-use. A single power source may drive all the cylinders. The machine may comprise several complete treating units and corresponding cylinders may be placed end to end and they may be supplied with liquid from a common tank. The apparatus may be used for treating artificial silk of the regenerated cellulose type or of cellulose esters. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the coagulating baths 10 and spinning nozzles 7 are at the back of the machine, and the threads pass to a series of <PICT:0413413/IV/4> <PICT:0413413/IV/5> <PICT:0413413/IV/6> <PICT:0413413/IV/7> tank 16 flows over a weir 17 on to the surfac of the second roller 13 from which it drains into a trough 18. It may be pumped back to trough 16 for re-use. Similar arrangements are provided for each of the wet treatment stages. The threads are dried while passing round the lower roller 13 which is enclosed in a casing through which hot air is circulated by a fan. The air is conditioned in regard to moisture content before entering the drying chamber. The rate of flow is controlled by dampers 29. The air is heated by steam pipes 23 and the temperature is regulated by a thermostat device 30 which controls the steam valve 31. The threads are advanced axially along the cylinder by constructing this of two sets of bars operated by cams. A shaft 32, Figs. 3 and 8, carries at each end a disc 33 having radial notches in which the bars 14<a>, 14<b> are mounted. Each disc 33 rotates adjacent a stationary cam disc 34 having cam grooves 35, 36 and end face cams 37, 38, Fig. 9. Each bar carries an arm 41 which enters one of the grooves 35, 36, and a shoulder 42 abutting one of the end cams 37, 38. During rotation of the winding devices 13 arranged one above another and driven from a motor 50. The threads pass in helical fashion round the cylinders 13 and are finally wound on reels 15. Liquid from a cylinder, the p bars reciprocate axially and radially in groups and cause the thread turns to be advanced axially. In order to effect automatic winding of the thread each successive cylinder is offset horizontally with regard to that above it, and the bars are cut away at the end of each operating zone to form a narrow edge 70, Figs. 5 and 6. When the leading end of the thread reaches an edge 70 it ceases to cling to the bar and falls by gravity to the surface of the cylinder beneath, round which it is carried. If desired the diameter or speed of rotation of successive cylinders may be such that the thread is stretched.
