674,423. Drying apparatus : heating air by direct contact with combustion gases. QUEENSMERE PROPERTIES & INVEST MENTS, Ltd., ENDEMANN, H. M., and EVANS, S. D. O. June 7, 1950 [June 13, 1949], No. 15660/49. Classes 34(ii) and 64(i). A drier for grass, &c. has two drying trays 10, 10a arranged on either side of a furnace 12 and hot gases may be passed at will through one or both of the trays either once or repeatedly, and the gases are reheated between successive passes. The oilfired furnace 12 has a burner 14 supplied with air through openings 18 and which projects its flame into a tube 16 of refractory material and a fan 20 draws air through openings 22 and around the tube 16, this air mixing with the combustion gases striking a baffle plate 24 between the tube 16 and the fan beyond, which a partition 28 divides the furnace into two chambers 30, 30a in which curved plates 32, 32a deflect the gases downwards. The compartments 10, 10a have sloping floors 34, 34a above which are perforated trays 36, 36a and partitions 40, 40a from which ducts 41, 41a communicating with the space beneath the trays through ports 38, 38a. Ports 42, 42a in the partitions 40, 40a establish communication between the chambers 30, 30a and the ducts 41, 41a. A damper 43 controlled by a hand lever 44 can be set in a central position to establish communication between the furnace and both compartments 10, 10a through the ports 40, 42, &c. and by moving the damper to the left or right one or other compartment may be cut off. The lids 45, 45a of the compartments are connected by linkages to dampers 48, 48a so that when the lids are opened communication is cut off between the upper part of that compartment and the furnace.
