Abstract
707,744. Drying furnace linings. BLANCHARD, P. April 24, 1951 [May 5, 1950], No. 9547/51. Class 34(2) The refractory lining of a furnace is dried by heating the inside and outside of the furnace simultaneously, a stream of gas, the temperature of which rises progressively being circulated within the lining and a stream of gas at constant temperature being circulated around the outside of the lining during the greater part of the operation. The furnace and lining 14 is placed in a drier 15 in communication with a furnace having a gas or oil burner 2 and fan 3 blowing air to the burner controlled by a baffle 4 operated by a regulator 5 influenced by a pyrometer rod 6 in the furnace 14. Hot gases escape to the upper part of furnace 14 and are diluted by air or gases supplied by fan 3 through duct 16 and after passing around the outside of furnace 14 escape through duct 17 and are used to dilute other hot gases from the burner. At the beginning of the drying the temperature inside furnace 14 is limited to about 100‹C and is retained outside the furnace 14 at 90‹C by cold air admitted by baffle 10 operated by a pyrometer 8 and regulator 9. By adjusting regulator 5 the temperature is allowed to increase slowly to complete the drying. In a modification a jacket is built around a fixed furnace instead of placing the furnace in a chamber.
