698,096. Drying-apparatus. RANSOMES, SIMS & JEFFERIES, Ltd., and JARVIS, J. S. Dec. 12, 1951 [Dec. 13, 1950], No. 30464/50. Class 34 (ii) [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for drying lucerne, grass, grain or the like 3 having a conveyer 2 to transport the material in a layer successively through several compartments I, II, III into which heated air or gases are passed to penetrate the layer has the connection of the duct 16 delivering the air to the compartments divided by partition 18 into numerous diverging ducts 19 to effect even distribution of the air. The casing 1 is divided into the compartments I, II, III by partitions 5, 6, 7 and is open above compartment I but compartments II,III are enclosed by a hood 8 having end openings 9, 10 with canvas curtains 11, 12, and a curtain 13. When grass is dried curtain 13 is raised and curtains 11, 12 are lowered and air heated by a heater 14 is supplied by a fan 15 through duct 16 and baffles 20 across ducts 19 and passes through the grass as indicated by arrows 40 and escapes to the atmosphere from compartment I but as in compartments II, III the grass is partly dried the air which is unsaturated returns via duct 17 for reheating, admixture with products of combustion andrecirculation. Baffles 26 distribute the air evenly and deflect it to duct 17. When grain is dried curtain B is lowered and curtains 11, 12 are opened. The hot gases supplied to compartments I, II pass through the grain and escape to atmosphere as shown by arrows 37 and dotted arrows 140. Cold air passes into compartment III through the grain into duct 17 to heater 14 and fan 15. The heater 14 comprises an outer casing 21 enclosing an oil burning furnace with a jacket 24 into the lower part of which the air from duct 17 enters. The material is fed to the conveyor 2 by an endless conveyer 4 and revolving drum 75 which spreads the material evenly. Specifications 388,526 and 704,082 are referred to.
