Abstract

271,143. Scott & Son (London), Ltd., G., and Riley, G. W. Feb. 16, 1926. Endless-band conveyers, fibrous material carried on; air, controlling circulation of.- Vegetables and other like products to be dried are conveyed through an upper chamber a and then through a lower chamber b, fresh air admitted through a hit-and-miss valve m<2>, being circulated through the lower chamber b along with the drying-air or hot waste gases and then passed into the upper chamber, together with a further supply of hot gases. The saturated gases are withdrawn from the top of the upper chamber by a fan v. The material is fed on to a top conveyer e by a pocketed-cylinder c<1>. Fig. 1, driven by ratchet gear, and passes along other conveyers e<1>, e<2> and through a valved shoot i to conveyers k, k<1> in the lower chamber. The hot gases are admitted through a flue m leading to a compartment m<1>, and a part passes through a series of hit-and-miss valves n<1> into the upper chamber, while the other part is circulated by a fan o<2>, Fig. 1, through ports m<3>, Fig. 3, and flues o, p to the lower chamber. A fan q<3>, Fig. 1, exhausts the gases from the lower chamber into the flue m, whence they pass with the fresh hot gases into a space a' at the side of the upper chamber. Within the space a<2> are fans t for producing a local circulation. The upper conveyers are driven from a common source h. while the lower conveyers may be driven at the same speed as the upper ones or otherwise. The valves n', m<2> may be manually adjusted by screw and nut gear n<2>. The fan v may exhaust through a grating x having end walls or baffles and adjustably positioned along the top of the chamber a. The chambers may be heated by air passed over heating pipes in the chambers.
