Abstract

464,758. Drying systems. ROWELL, R. H., SANDERSON, T., and SANDERSON, D. H. Aug. 20, 1935, Nos. 23382 and 32928. [Class 34,(ii)] A method of drying consists in supporting the charge to be dried on a surface permeable to gaseous media and subjecting it simultaneously to an emission of radiant heat from extended surfaces forming radiant panels in close proximity to but not in contact with the charge and to a current of dry gaseous media for removing moisture, the panels being directly heated from within by hot gaseous media derived from the same source as the moisture-removing current. In the construction shown, which is intended especially for drying freshly-cut green fodder, the material to be dried enters the drying chamber a through a hopper provided with a rotary valve k<1>, and falls on the uppermost of a series of perforated endless-band conveyers m. The conveyers are adapted to be driven with adjacent conveyers moving in opposite directions, and the material is conveyed in succession on the upper surface of each conveyer, being finally discharged through an outlet provided with a rotary valve n<1>. The drying chamber is supplied with hot drying gas from a furnace f through passages h<1>, h. In addition hot gas is supplied through passages to superposed ducts c provided along the sides of the chamber. The ducts are connected by spaced transverse ducts g which are perforated. The ducts c, g are of dull black sheet-metal to assist heat radiation. The temperature of the gas admitted to the chamber is controlled by slides r<1>, s<1> controlling admission of atmospheric air. The supply of gas admitted to the ducts c is controlled by flaps e. The slides r<1>, s<1> and the flaps e are preferably operated under thermostatic control. Moisture-laden gas is removed by means of a fan t. In a modified construction articles carried on endless perforated belts pass through longitudinal channels positioned between longitudinal heat-radiating ducts. In a further modification, the charge to be 'dried is spread on one or more trays of expanded metal which are slidden into the drying chamber and subsequently withdrawn when the charge is dry. In a still further modification, the charge is supported on superposed surfaces of perforated material over which it is traversed by linked rakes or scrapers.
