[A Specification was laid open . to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 17, 1950.] Class 64(i) In a heat-exchanger in which a refractory wall 4, at the top of a heat-exchange chamber formed by a vertical wall 1, forms an inlet for heating gas, and a header 2 for gas to be heated surrounds a portion of the refractory wall 4 and has tubes 3 suspended from it in the chamber, a cooling jacket 11 constitutes the support of the refractory wall 4 and has inlet and outlet connections for a cooling medium. The jacket, which is annular and L-shaped in cross-section, is connected by rings of short tubes 15, 16 to annular supply and return tubes 20, 23. The jacket may be cooled by passing through it the gas to be heated in the tubes 3, or air or gaseous fuel to be used in combustion to form the heat source.
