Abstract
671,115. Welding by fusion. DIRECTIE VAN DE STAATSMIJNEN IN LIMBURG. April 7, 1949 [April 8, 1948], No. 9525/49. Class 83 (iv). In the electric butt fusion welding of tubes wherein the ends of the tubes are bevelled externally, the end of one tube is bevelled over substantially the whole thickness of its wall and the end of the other tube is bevelled over only part of the thickness of its wall to leave an unbevelled root face, the tubes are held with their bevelled ends spaced and with the bevels diverging and are then welded together from the outside without a backing ring to form a joint extending over the whole thickness of the walls of the tubes. The end of tube 1 is bevelled at 4 as far as its inner periphery whilst tube 2 is bevelled at 6 so that root face 5 has a width a at least equal to the effective diameter of the electrode 3. In constructing a pipe line sections having both ends bevelled over their whole thickness are used with sections bevelled at both ends to leave root faces. Alternatively sections have one end bevelled more deeply than the other may be employed.
