670,669. Vehicle brakes. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and ELLCOCK, A. W. Aug. 22, 1950 [Aug. 26, 1949], No. 22169/49. Class 103 (i). In a brake system for a road vehicle wherein the front wheel brakes are applied by hydraulic pressure generated by a master cylinder 15 and the rear wheel brakes by mechanical action through a rod 20, the foot lever 10 is pivoted on a shaft 11 and, in addition to actuating the master cylinder 15 through an arm 12 and adjustable stop 13, carries a further arm 22 having a pivoted collar 23 intermediate relatively weak and strong springs 25 and 26, the ends of which abut stops 27, 28 fixed to the rod 20. Actuation of the pedal has the effect of positively applying the hydraulic brakes on the front wheels and of applying the rear wheel brakes through the compression of spring 26 so as to a.fford any desired increase of hydraulic braking in relation to the mechanical braking. Actuation of the hand brake control 5, 6, 7 has the effect of positively applying the mechanical brakes and, through spring 25 of lightly applying the hydraulic brakes irrespective of the degree of application of the mechanical brakes.
