Abstract
688,682. Vehicle brake controls. SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. March 22, 1950 [March 23, 1949], No. 4960/49. Class 103 (i). A brake mechanism for vehicles comprises combined foot and hand controls both operative to apply the main braking system, the hand control enabling the driver to maintain the brakes applied for holding the vehicle on a hill or for parking purposes but not interfering with the foot control. A transmission member 4a is fulcrummed about a pivot 5 carried by a bracket member 6 mounted on a collar 7a on a transverse shaft 7, the pivot also engaging in the slotted part 8 of a pull-push rod 9 actuated by the hand control lever 15. A torque arm 17 actuated by the pedal 16 and mounted on a second collar on the shaft 7 also engages the bracket member by a pin 18. When the hand lever is in released position the slotted part 8 provides freedom of movement for the pedal action. As shown, the transmission member 4a acts through a lever 4 on the usual hydraulic master cylinder 1 but the mechanism may also be used with compressed air or vacuum or other servo systems.
