1300329 Antiskid systems WESTING- HOUSE BREMSEN-UND APPARATEBAU GmbH 4 May 1970 [10 May 1969] 21267/70 Heading F2F In an antiskid vehicle brake system in which a sensor responsive to rotational deceleration of the vehicle wheels at least partially releases the vehicle brakes when the sensor indicates the approach of wheel lock; the action of the sensor is delayed in accordance with the rate at which the vehicle brakes are actuated. As described the sensor comprises an inertia mass 53 rotatable relative to a vehicle wheel 46 in opposition to the bias of a spring 50. When the brakes are applied, bracking pressure charger wheel brake cylinder 9 and reaches a cylinder 19 via a branch pipe 18 to charge a two-stage piston 24 and build up a pressure in a pipe 44 which displaces a hollow piston 48 in a cylinder 47 to impart a bias to the spring 50. In addition the braking pressure acts on a piston 34 of a tandem cylinder 30 in dependence on the speed with which brake pedal 2 is actuated so that with a high actuating speed piston 34 moves a control piston 36 at such speed that the pressure fluid, due to the throttling action cannot escape quickly through a restriction 39 from a chamber 38 to a chamber 37 and so pressure builds up in chamber 38 in dependence on the brake actuating speed and acts on a piston 23 of the cylinder 19 and via common piston rod 25 on piston 24. At low actuating speed the additional displacement of piston 48 is smaller because of the throttling effect of restriction 39. When during braking one or more wheels begin to skid, the mass 53 rotates relative to the wheel against spring 50 to close a contact 54 and energize an electromagnetically controlled valve 8 which returns the pressure fluid via a pipe 12 to an equalizing cylinder reservoir 13 and relieves braking pressure, the switching level thus being dependent on the speed of brake actuation. Bias of spring 50 is also adjustable by means of a set screw 51. A pneumatic system Fig, 2 includes a tandem cylinder 59 with a piston 60 directly connected to brake pressure and a control piston 36<SP>1</SP> with restriction 39<SP>1</SP>.
