Abstract

670,302. Monitoring transmitters; valve generating circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. March 28, 1950 [July 6, 1949], No. 17897/49. Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vi). The terminal station of a two-way radio communication system comprises a transmitter operating on one frequency and a superheterodyne receiver operating on another, and the receiver is provided with an additional local oscillator circuit which may be substituted for its normal local oscillator whereby the receiver is tuned to the operating frequency of the transmitter at the terminal station for monitoring the performance of the transmitter or receiver or both. As shown in Fig. 1 the receiver comprises R.F. amplifier 5, frequency changing stage 6, I.F. amplifier 7, and a demodulator or discriminator 8, local oscillations being provided by a harmonic amplifier 10 driven by a crystalcontrolled oscillator 11a or 11b selected by a switch 14. Alternatively, interchangeable plugin crystals may be used. With the oscillator 11a in circuit the receiver is tuned to the distant transmitter, substitution of the oscillator 11b tuning the receiver to the local transmitter for monitoring. Fig. 2 shows a suitable local oscillator circuit which includes two frequency determining circuits 12 and 13 each comprising a crystal in series with a parallel-tuned circuit, one or other circuit being selected by ganged switches 14a, 14b, and the output of the oscillator applied to the harmonic amplifier 10.
