Abstract

621,694. Frequency modulation; automatic tuning correction. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and EASTER, B. July 12, 1946, No. 20973. [Class 40 (v)] A frequency discriminator for frequency modulation receivers or automatic frequency control comprises a pair of rectifiers D1, D2 with associated load impedances R1, R2 arranged so that the rectifier outputs are in mutual opposition, a divided input circuit L2, C2 connected or coupled between the rectifier circuits broadly resonant at the datum frequency, a piezo-electric crystal PC associated with one rectifier circuit and having its selfcapacitance balanced by a capacitor CN associated with the other rectifier and a reactance resonating with the crystal at the datum frequency and inserted in a common part of the rectifier circuit. The current through the series resonant crystal and reactance combination produces across the reactance the quadrature voltage required for the discriminator to operate. The reactance is preferably a condenser in which case the load resistors are connected to the input circuit side of the condenser to preserve the D.C. path (Fig. 2, not shown).
