Abstract

596,519. Frequency modulation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 28, 1945, No. 19347. Convention date, July 28, 1944. [Class 40 (v)] A detector for angle modulated oscillations comprises two series resonant circuits, oppositely mistuned with respect to a centre frequency, arranged so that the inductances have a common terminal, and the condensers have a common terminal coupled through a low impedance to an input circuit tuned to the centre frequency, means for rectifying the voltages developed across the inductances and differentially combining the rectified voltages. As shown in Fig. 1, series resonant circuits C1, L1 and C2, L2 are mistuned on opposite sides of the frequency to which the input circuit 6, fed from a limiter 1, is tuned. The common terminal of condensers C1, C2 is coupled through a low impedance condenser C3 to a low potential point on the input circuit. The junction of coils L1, L2 is connected to earth through byepass condenser 9<1>, while the voltages appearing across coils L1, L2 are rectified by diodes 10, 11 respectively, and an audio output taken off through chole 12. The capacity coupling C3 may be replaced by inductive coupling (Fig. 2, not shown). In a modification, Fig. 4, the coils L1, L2 are shunted by damping resistors R3, R4. In tuning this embodiment, the ganged condensers C1, C2 are adjusted to tune the series resonant circuits C1, L1 and C2, L2 to one side of the centre frequency, and the circuit C1, L1 is then tuned to the opposite side of the centre frequency by an auxiliary condenser C4. The discriminator may be fed through a concentric cable terminated by a resistance and connected to the input circuit through a blocking condenser (Fig. 6, not shown) or a coupling coil (Fig. 7, not shown). The discriminator may be used as a monitor for a frequency modulated transmission, when it is coupled to the output circuit of the transmitter. Specification 296,678, [Class 40 (v)], is referred to.
