Abstract

Copolymers are prepared by heating acrylonitrile together with 2 to 25 per cent of a vinyl pyridine in aqueous emulsion at 30 DEG to 100 DEG C. at a pH of 7 to 10.5 in the presence of a water-soluble persulphate, such as ammonium or sodium persulphate, as the sole polymerisation catalyst. Vinyl pyridines specified are 2- and 4-vinyl pyridines, 4-ethyl-2-vinyl pyridine, and 4,6-dimethyl-2-vinyl pyridine. Suitable dispersing agents are sodium oleate, alkali metal or ammonium salts of aromatic and aliphatic sulphonates, C-cetylbetaine, and the reaction products of ethylene oxide with alcohols. The copolymers may be formed into fibres which have good dye reception, particularly for acid dyes. Specifications 586,796, 597,368 and 670,268 are referred to.
