Abstract

Ternary copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing acrylonitrile, a vinyl pyridine and allyl alcohol or a substituted allyl alcohol in bulk, using as catalyst an organic peroxide or an azodinitrile, or in emulsion or in solution at pH 2-9, using as catalyst an oxidation-reduction system. The vinyl pyridine may be 2-, 3- or 4-vinyl, 2-ethyl-5-vinyl, 2-vinyl-5-ethyl, 2-methyl-5-vinyl, or 2-vinyl-5-methyl pyridine or 2-vinyl quinoline, and the substituted allyl alcohol may have one or more methyl, ethyl, propyl, isobutyl, isoamyl or chlorine substituents in various positions. Examples describe polymerization in aqueous medium, the oxidation-reduction system comprising potassium persulphate or hydrogen peroxide and sodium bisulphite, and lauryl sulphonate may also be present. The copolymer may be used for the production of fibres and filaments which can be dyed.
