Abstract
Copolymers containing from 80 to 99 per cent of acrylonitrile and from 1 to 20 per cent of glycerol alpha-allyl ether, glycerol alpha-methallyl ether, or glycerol alpha-(b -chloroallyl)ether with or without up to 19 per cent of another monomer or monomers are made by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and optionally a chain-terminator. Other monomers mentioned are vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, styrene, methacrylonitrile, vinyl pyridine, methyl methacrylate and diethyl maleate. Suitable emulsifiers are sodium oleate, potassium oleate, salts of triethanolamine, dodecylmethylamine, and rosin acids, and alkylaryl sulphonates. Specified chain-terminators are alkyl and aryl mercaptans, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, dithioglycidol, and alcohols. Catalysts mentioned are sodium and hydrogen peroxides, potassium persulphate, sodium percarbonate, and sodium perborate. The copolymer may be made into fibres by dissolving in N,N-dimethylacetamide, N,N-dimethyl formamide, gamma - butyrolactone or ethylene carbonate and extruding the solution utilizing wet or dry spinning techniques. In an example fibres are dyed scarlet using acid dyes.
