Abstract

A dyeable polymeric product is prepared by polymerizing acrylonitrile, alone or with another monomer, in the presence of a cyanoethylated polyhydric alcohol with the aid of an azo or redox catalyst. Cyanoethylated polyhydric alcohols specified are cyanoethylated starch, sucrose and polyvinyl alcohol. Other monomers specified are alkyl acrylates, e.g. methyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylates, styrene, vinyl acetate and vinyl chloroacetate. Catalysts specified are azobisisobutyronitrile and a potassium persulphatesodium bisulphite mixture. Polymerization may be carried out in an aqueous medium, preferably at a pH about neutral. The process may be of the type in which the reaction ingredients are fed to a reactor provided with an outlet through which polymerized material discharges. The products may be dissolved in dimethyl formamide to form a solution from which may be spun fibres which are dyeable with acid, basic and acetate dyestuffs.ALSO:Sucrose is cyanoethylated by warming with acrylonitrile in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide.
