Abstract
Graft polymers are made by polymerising in the presence of a catalyst acrylonitrile, with or without another ethylenically unsaturated compound, in an aqueous dispersion of pH 2-7, increasing the pH to 7-12 and then polymerising therein vinyl or vinylidene chloride. Monomers copolymerisable with acrylonitrile are acrylic acid, acrylates, methacrylates, acrylamide, methacrylamide, methacrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyridine, unsaturated sulphonic acids, e.g. styrene sulphonic acid, and, as a cross-linking monomer, triacrylyl-perhydrotriazine. As a catalyst there is specified a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium bisulphite, which may be used in both polymerisation stages or in the first polymerisation stage only followed by the use of azo-bis-dimethyl-valeronitrile. The resulting polymers are soluble in dimethyl formamide and fibres may be spun from such solutions with the use of a kerosene hydrocarbon coagulating bath. Specification 824,226 is referred to.
