Abstract

Films and fibres made from homogeneous mixtures of an acrylonitrile polymer and a copolymer containing a plurality of different types of structural units derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomers, at least one of which contains a basic tertiary-amino group linked to the ethylenic structural unit through an amide linkage (see Group IV (a)), are, dyed with acetate, basic, acid, and vat dyestuffs.ALSO:Compositions comprise a homogeneous mixture of an acrylonitrile polymer and a copolymer containing a plurality of different types of structural units derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomers at least one of which contains a basic tertiary-amino group linked to the ethylenic structural unit through an amide linkage, such as N-(2-pyridyl) acrylamide and methacrylamide, p-dimethylamino acrylamide and methacrylamide, N-pyridyl itaconic and maleic acid monoamides and diamides and the methyl and ethyl esters of the monoamides, N-(2,6-dimethyl-4-pyrimidyl) acrylamide, and N-(2,6 - dimethyl - 4 - pyrimidyl) monoamide of itaconic acid monomethyl ester, and the corresponding derivatives of guanazole and guanazole derivatives. Specified copolymers of the ethylenic tertiary-amino amides are those with one or more of styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl naphthalenes, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methyacrylamide, beta - cyano - acrylamide, methyl beta - cyano - acrylamide, dimethyl and diethyl fumarates, maleates, and itaconates, fumaraonitrile, itacondiamide, vinyl and vinylidene fluorides and chlorides, tetrafluoroethylene, trifluorochloroethylene, and vinyl acetate. Polymers of acrylonitrile specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers with the copolymerizable monomers referred to above. The polymers may be mixed on blending rolls or by solution in a mutual solvent such as dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, dimethyl cyanamide, dimethyl cyanoacetamide, dimethyl methoxyacetamide, dimethyl methyl urethane, butyrolactone, ethylene carbonate, ethylene carbamate, methylene dinitrile, methylene dithiocyanate, formyl caprolactam, formyl morpholine, tetramethylene sulphone, and nitromethane. The solutions of the polymer mixtures may be formed into films and fibres which may be oriented by stretching and dyed with acetate, basic, acid or vat dyestuffs. The polymers may be prepared in emulsion, suspension, mass, or solution in the presence of catalysts such as hydrogen, benzoyl, naphthyl, and phthalyl peroxides, cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide, tertiary-butyl perbenzoate, ammonium persulphate, and azo catalysts; exemplified is the use of an aqueous polymerization medium of pH 3 containing a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium bisulphite as a catalyst.
