500,475. Vinyl polymerization products. JOHNSON, G. W. (1. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Aug. 5, 1937, No. 21607. [Class 2 (iii)] Water-soluble polymerization products are prepared by heating monomeric alkali or ammonium salts of acrylic acid or its alpha homologues, in the presence of accelerators giving off oxygen, in a slightly acid aqueous solution having a pH range of from 4À5 to 5À5 The acid employed to form the solution may be acrylic acid, a weak acid such as propionic or butyric acid, or an acid which is stronger than acrylic acid, e.g. sulphuric hydrochloric or monochloracetic acid, in which case an interaction takes place between the acid and the acrylic acid salt with the formation of free acrylic acid and the salt of the added acid. The polymerization may be carried out in a metallic vessel, e.g. a stirring vessel or kneading machine lined with sheet chromium-nickel steel. In an example, caustic soda solution is added to an aqueous solution containing an excess of monomeric acrylic acid, potassium persulphate is added, and polymerization initiated by heating. When polymerization is completed, the solution of interpolymer is neutralized. The alkali or ammonium salts of alpha-methyl or alpha-ethyl acrylic acid may be similarly treated.
