Abstract

1277577 Preparing water-soluble acrylic polymers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Sept 1969 [27 June 1968] 30758/68 Heading C3P Water-soluble polymers of acryilc acid or a substituted or functional derivative thereof are prepared in substantially dry form by (a) forming an aqueous solution of the monomer and initiating polymerization, (b) adding a waterimmiscible liquid which is capable of forming an azeotrope with water and is a non-solvent for the monomer or the resultant polymer, the liquid being added whilst the aqueous solution is still fluid, (c) dispersing the aqueous solution throughout the liquid and maintaining the dispersion until polymerization is substantially complete, and (d) thereafter heating the mixture to the boil and removing water by azeotropic distillation until not more than 5% by weight of water is left in the polymer. Suitable derivatives of acrylic acid include alkali metal salts, acrylamide, methacrylic acid and methacrylamide. The monomer may be copolymerized with a monomer that, by itself, forms a water-insoluble homopolymer, e.g. acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride, in proportions that provide water-soluble copolymers. Initiators specified are potassium persulphate/ sodium bisulphite, ammonium persulphate/ copper sulphate or sodium metabisulphite, and hydrogen peroxide/ferrous salt redox systems. Liquids which may be added in step (b) include aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated derivatives thereof. A dispersing agent may be used in step (c), e.g. cellulose ethers, soya lecithin, hexadecyl sodium phthalate, sorbitan monooleate or monostearate, sodium cetyl/stearyl phthalate, ethylene oxide/ fatty acid amide condensates, Fuller's earth, talc, bentonite, calcium or magnesium carbonate, calcium phosphate or sodium sulphate; these prevent particles of the polymer coalescing during the drying step (d). In some examples polyacrylamide is produced in which some of the amide groups have been hydrolysed with caustic soda.
