Abstract

1,168,551. Non-stable emulsion polymerization process. NALCO CHEMICAL CO. 27 Jan., 1967 [21 March, 1966], No. 4153/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C1] Polymers of water-soluble monomers having high molecular weights (at least 5 million) are prepared by forming a polymerizable system containing (a) a suspended phase comprising an aqueous solution of at least one ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble monomer; (b) a suspending phase comprising a water-insoluble organic liquid heat-transfer medium; and (c) an emulsification agent present in an amount sufficient to maintain an apparent emulsion under agitation but insufficient to permit formation of a stable emulsion; agitating said system to form an apparent emulsion; adding a polymerization catalyst to said apparent emulsion to initiate polymerization; and polymerizing said system with agitation for sufficient time to form a polymer having a molecular weight of at least 5 million as determined by light scattering technique, said polymer being in the form of a powder having an average particle diameter of from 1 to 10 microns. Water-soluble monomers specified are acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic and methacrylic acid and salts thereof, carboxyethyl acrylate and salts thereof, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, aconitic and citraconic acids and the amides and alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts thereof. The organic liquid suspending phase is preferably one which forms an azeotropic mixture with water, e.g. aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons. As emulsifier, nonionic compounds are preferred, e.g. ethylene oxide condensates of fatty acid amides and sorbitan monopalmitates and monostearates. Conventional azo, peroxy and redox catalysts may be used to initiate polymerization. The polymer products are useful in removing, by coagulation, solids suspended in a liquid medium. Examples illustrate the preparation and use of polyacrylamide.
