Abstract

A stable aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of ethylene and at least one vinyl ester is obtained by a process wherein an aqueous emulsion of the vinyl ester, emulsifier or protective colloid and catalyst, is copolymerized with ethylene in a reaction vessel at a pressure up to 300 atmospheres, and wherein the weight ratio of vinyl ester and catalyst is maintained substantially constant. Other monomers may be present and specified are acrylamide, acrylic, crotonic and methacrylic acids and esters, esters of maleic and fumaric acids, and vinyl sulphonic acid and its alkali metal salts. The catalyst may be a vinyl-ester-soluble peroxide, a water-soluble peroxy compound, a redox system or an azo compound. In examples, the emulsion ingredients comprise the hydroxyethylation product of an alkyl phenol, the sodium salt of the sulphonic acid of a C14 hydrocarbon, hydroxyethyl cellulose, Na4P2O7, and acetic acid to adjust pH. The products are substantially free of grafted material.
