Abstract
Polymers and copolymers of halogenated derivatives of ethylene, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and their after-chlorinated derivatives are stabilized by addition, before or during shaping under the action of heat, of 0.5 to 2 per cent of an alkali metal or magnesium thiosulphate. The solid thiosulphate may be added on the rolling mill, or an aqueous alcoholic solution thereof may be mixed with the resin and the suspension dried in vacuo, or a concentrated aqueous solution may be mixed with an aqueous emulsion of the resin. In a modification, a mixture of sulphite and sulphur may be used to form the thiosulphate in situ on heating. Examples describe the use of sodium, potassium, lithium and magnesium thiosulphates.
