670,253. Vehicles with telescopic bodies. WALKERS & COUNTY CARS, Ltd., TAPP, E. T. J., and DAVEY, J. Dec. 8, 1949. [November 12, 1948] No. 29498/48. Class 78 (iv). In a telescopic vehicle body of the kind comprising a number of scuppers which may be nested within one another at the rear end of the chassis and which, when extended, leave a gap between the forward scupper and the driver's cab, the forward (innermost) scupper is provided with a substantially centrally disposed forwardly directed extension of comparatively small width provided with one or more rollers or the like for engaging a substantially central rail on the chassis or on a part secured thereto. Scupper 12 (Fig. 1) forming part of the body of a refuse vehicle is adapted to telescope into a scupper 11 which in turn nests in a fixed scupper 10. The scupper 11 is provided at each side with rollers 14 engaging short guide rails 15 secured above the chassis frame 13 and provided with upward projections 16 limiting the movement of the rollers 14. The rear end of the scupper 11 is provided with a plate 17 which slides along the bottom wall 18 of the rear scupper 10. To the rear wall 41 of the forward scupper 12 is secured a cylinder 22 carrying at its forward end a roller 29 bearing on a rail 30 secured above the chassis frame. Within the cylinder 22 slides a hollow plunger 23 with a piston head 24 and in which slides a piston 25 connected by its rod 26 to a post 27 behind the driver's cab 19. By admitting pressure liquid to the appropriate sides of the pistons 24 and 25 the scuppers 10, 11, 12 may be extended or nested. Alternative arrangements employ the triple cylinder block described in Specification 647,982, [Group XXXII]; the cylinder block is supported by a roller from the central rail as also is the forward extension of the forward scupper which extension lies under the cylinder block. In such an arrangement the central piston rod may be connected to the chassis and the other two piston rods to the forward scupper, or vice-versa. The cylinder block may be disposed with the cylinders sideby-side or one above the other. Specification 589,306 also is referred to.
