Abstract
669,000. Protective arrangements. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. May 16, 1950 [June 18, 1949], No. 12166/50. Class 38 (iv). In a surge diverter comprising a stack of series-connected units 1, each consisting of a plurality of spark gaps 6 in series with voltage-dependent resistors 7, the number of gaps in any unit is proportional to the voltage across that unit (as determined by the natural voltage distribution along the stack) so that all gaps are equally stressed. The lowermost unit may consist solely of voltage-dependent resistors. To prevent breakdown of the units containing the smaller numbers of gaps, due to modified voltage distribution along the stack caused, for instance, by moisture on the insulating tubes housing the units, the effective lengths of the tubes of such units may be reduced by external conductive bands 8 connected to the metal flanges 2 by which the units are joined together.
