668,167. Preserving fish. KJORSTAD, E. A. H. June 1, 1948 [June 4, 1947], No. 14790/48. Class 49. [Also in Group XIII] A process for preserving fish comprises placing the fish in a chilled brine solution, the freezing point of which is at least 4‹ C. lower than the freezing point of the fish, keeping it there until the fish is on the point of freezing and then terminating the cooling so that no significant amount of ice is formed in or on the fish. The brine may be concentrated sea water. When the method is applied on board ship, the fish are loosely placed in containers having a top opening and a door outlet at the bottom, a little ice having been first placed at the bottom. The brine is then passed over the fish which are then washed with a little sea water and removed for storage in the hold with ice. On shore, freshly caught fish are placed in meshed-bottom boxes 1, several of which are stacked in a casing 2, plates 5 being interposed between the boxes. The plates 5 have rubber edge gaskets. An upper plate 7 having meshes 8 is maintained in place by springs 9. The brine is introduced by a pipe 13 and leaves through a pipe 11 or vice versa.
