Abstract

667,178. Ironing-machines. BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. Feb. 6, 1950 [Feb. 4, 1949], No. 3171/49. Class 138 (ii). [Also in Group XI] In a laundry ironing-machine moisture is evaporated from the padding of the rollers 5 so that the machine can be operated continuously, by means of a series of infra-red electric lamps 13 supported by a framework or hood 4 mounted on the side frames 1 or other fixture of the machine. As shown, the hood 4 is mounted on rollers 3 running on tracks 2 on the side frames of the machine. The lamps 13 project through apertures 12 in the hood, being supported by carriers 15 mounted on the hood so that each series of lamps is inclined towards the axis of a roller. Guards in the form of wires 16 supported at their ends in the end walls 6 of the hood prevent a lamp or part thereof accidentally falling on to the rollers 5. Means may be provided for automatically switching the lamps off when the rollers stop. Alternatively the rollers may be protected from scorching when stationary by means of a shutter. In a modification (not shown) the framework or hood carrying the lamps is pivotally mounted on posts secured to the side frames 1, so that it can be swung upwardly out of position. The lamps may be provided with a semi-circular or parabolic reflecting hood or hoods, and ring-shaped wire guards carried by the reflectors.
