Abstract

The compound, 3 : 7-dimethyl-(21 : 61 : 61-trimethylcyclohex - 11 - enyl) - nona - 4 : 6 : 8-trien - 1 - yn - 3 - ol having the formula: <FORM:0667106/IV (b)/1> This compound is obtained by reacting a halogeno magnesium derivative of the formula: <FORM:0667106/IV (b)/2> where X is chlorine or bromine, with 6-methylocta-3 : 5 : 7-triene-2-one in the presence of an inert solvent and decomposing the resulting organo magnesium complex to yield the desired carbinol. The reaction may be effected using as solvent aliphatic ethers and in an inert atmosphere in the presence of an antioxidant within the temperature range -30 DEG to 20 DEG C. The resulting complex is decomposed by ammonium chloride at 0 DEG C. Specifications 627,453, 659,842, 665,146, and 669,568 are referred to.
