Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:1095797/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are H or C1- 6 alkyl (but at least 2 R radicals are H) are dimerized to diketones by treatment at 10-70 DEG C. with solid KOH in an inert aprotic diluent (e.g. ether or benzene) which does not dissolve the KOH. Isophorone reacts to give a diketone of formula <FORM:1095797/C2/2> as well as a hydroxyketone dimer as by-product. 3,5 - Dimethyl - 2 - cyclohexenone gives a mixture of two diketone dimers which are separated by chromatography; the conversion of 3-methyl-2-cyclohexenone to a diketone dimer is also described.
