Abstract

6 - Methyl - 8 - (11 - hydroxy - 21 : 61 : 61 - trimethylcyclohexyl) octa - 3 : 5 - dien - 7 - yn - 2 - ol having the formula <FORM:0674088/IV (b)/1> This compound may be prepared by reacting a halogeno magnesium derivative of 6-methyl-octa-3 : 5-dien-7-yn-2-ol having the formula <FORM:0674088/IV (b)/2> (where X is chlorine or bromine) with 2 : 6 : 6-trimethylcyclohexanone in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. diethyl ether, di-n-butyl ether, dioxan or tetrahydrofuran and decomposing the resulting organo-magnesium complex to yield the desired carbinol, e.g. by means of water or aqueous ammonium chloride. The reaction may be effected in the temperature range -20 DEG to +60 DEG C. in the presence of an anti-oxidant. Specification 674,059 is referred to.
