Abstract
Halogenated cycloaliphatic compounds are prepared by reacting a cycloalkene having at least two ethylenic double bonds and from 8 to 20 carbon atoms in the carbocyclic ring with a hydrogen halide in the presence of anhydrous zinc halide as catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an inert solvent such as diethyl ether, carbon tetrachloride or cyclohexane and at 10 DEG -25 DEG C. In examples: (1) cis:trans:trans- or trans: trans: trans-cyclododeca-1 : 5 : 9-triene is dissolved in diethylether, zinc chloride is added and dry hydrogen chloride passed in until a red oil separates, the mixture is stood for 7 days at room temperature, poured into cold water, the ethereal layer separated and distilled to yield 1-chlorocyclododeca-5: 9-diene; (5) cyclo-octa-1,5-diene is reacted as in (1) to yield 1-chlorocyclo-octa-4-ene.
