Class 6(i) A rotary plough comprises two bearings 1 mounted on a tractor and provided with guides 2. Stirrups 5 slide in the guides and are connected by transverse members 7. Casings 10 are rotatably mounted in bearings 8, 9 and are connected by ring- shaped grooves 11 to a central casing 12 which is connected to the members 7. A shaft 13 is connected at one end by a flange 14 to a universally jointed drive transmitting shaft on the tractor and is provided with a bevel gear 15 which drives a transverse shaft 16 which is provided with bevel gears 17 driving longitudinal shafts 18. The shafts 18 are provided with gears 20 which drive shafts 23, journalled in casings 22, formed with the casings 10, through pinions 24 and chains 21. Screw-like cutters are journalled in the shafts 23 and the chains 21 are tensioned by sprockets 42 eccentrically mounted in bearings on the casings 22. The casings 22 are connected in pairs by members 29. A sector 30 mounted on each stirrup 5 engages a sprocket 31 mounted on a shaft 32 pivoted in extensions 19 of the casings 10 and driven by worm and wheel gearing 33, 34 from the shafts 18 through a clutch (not shown) to raise or lower the casings 22 about the bearings 8, 9. The shaft 32 may be rotated by a handle. The stirrups 5 are moved in the guides 2 by means of threaded shafts 4 rotatably mounted in the stirrups 5 and engaging threaded bushes 3 mounted in the bearings 1. Each shaft 4 is rotated by a worm mounted on a shaft 37 which engages a pinion on the shaft 4. The shaft 37 may be rotated by hand or alternatively it may be driven through suitable transmission, including a clutch and reversing means, by a shaft 38 connected by means of a gear 39 and worm 40 with the shaft 13. The arms 22 may be arranged to carry more than one cutter staggered in a longitudinal direction in order to increase the depth of working. Knives may be mounted in the casing 22 to operate between the zones of soil between the sections worked by adjacent tools. The cutters may be driven by an electric motor or a motor generator driven by an engine which drives the machine forwardly.
