Abstract
143,999. Burt, J. L., (Miller, M. L.). March 20, 1919. Diggers. - In motor-driven mechanical digging or ditching machines in which the tools are operated by cranks and controlled by pivoted links, means are provided for discharging the earth at the side of the trench, for adjusting the depth of work, and for alternatively driving the travelling wheels independently of the digging-mechanism or simultaneously with it and at a speed proportionate to that of the diggers. The machine shown in Fig. 1 comprises a channel-iron frame 1 mounted on two driving- wheels 2 and a steering-wheel 3. The wheels 2 are driven directly from the engine 4 through a gear-box 5, a longitudinal shaft, a cross-shaft 12, and bevel, spur, and differential gearing. Means are also provided for driving them from the shaft 25 of the digging-mechanism by chain gearing and free-wheel clutches. The crank-shaft 25 is driven directly from the engine through a longitudinal shaft, a cross-shaft 14, and bevel and spur gearing. The crank-shaft 25 is supported by sets of pivoted arms 13, and is adjusted by means of pivoted bars 15, a nut 16, screw 17, and handwheel 18. The shafts 36 of the digging-spades 37 are pivotally connected to the cranks on the shaft 25 and to controlling-links 35. Cutting- disks 53 are carried by extensions of the arms 13. The spades are arranged in pairs as shown in Fig. 4. Each has webs 38, 39 on the lower and upper side respectively. The soil dug up is discharged laterally by pivoted and spring-controlled plates 40, 42 moved across the spades by rods 43 connected to collars 44 sliding on rods 45. As the crank-shaft 25 rotates, the collars 44 engage slipper blocks 48 on rods 49 pivoted on the shaft 25.
