Digging-apparatus ; rotary scrapers.-A machine for digging and cleaning ditches comprises a wheeled frame 1 having to one side a semicircular envelope 33 within which is a rotating wormlike cutter 30 which digs and lifts the earth to a casing 34 from which it is ejected by centrifugal vanes 35; a knife 29 in advance of the cutter 30 is reciprocated by an eccentric 55 to loosen soil, and the lower end of the cutter 30 carries a toothed blade 49 reciprocated by an eccentric 48 to co-operate with a fixed blade 47 in cutting weeds. The frame is supported on a large drive wheel 3, an adjustable side wheel 6, and steering wheels 7, and carries a motor 10 connected through chain 12, shaft 14 and gears 15, 16 to a countershaft 17 ; the shaft 17, through chain gearing 20, and a slipping clutch 38, drives a shaft 18b which drives the cutter 30 and vanes 35 separately through bevel gears 41, 42, and 45, 46. The shaft 17 also drives through variable-speed chain gearing 22, 23 a shaft 27 which drives the wheel 3 through chain gearing 26 and reciprocates the knife 29 through gearing 57, 56 and the eccentric 55. The cutter 30 is longitudinally divided, the sections being keyed on a shaft 32 adjustably secured in a fork 37 by a nut 40 ; additional sections of the cutter 30 may be added as required. The fork 37 is adjustable about the shaft 18b by means of gearing 50, 52 and a handle 53 and may be yieldably held by chains and an interposed spring 54. The cutter 29 may be adjusted laterally about a. pivot 58 by means of a hand wheel 59.
