Abstract

Endless-chain machines. -In a machine for cutting trenches for the reception of drain pipes, cables, &c., of the kind having a power-. driven chassis bearing buckets carried by endless chains passing over sprocket wheels on a frame mounted on the chassis, the sprocket wheels k for the chains k<1> are carried by a triangular frame j mounted to pivot about a shaft j<1> and situated at one side of the chassis, the chains being provided with alternately arranged buckets k<2> and diggers k<3>. Adjustment of the frame to vary the depth excavated is effected through links j<2> and hand-operated screwed shafts j<4>. Movement is imparted to the shaft j<1> from the engine g through a gear box e, chain gearing, and a clutch. To prevent the sides of the trench from falling in, plates y are secured on each side of the lowest angle of the frame j. Excavated earth passes to a three-branched shoot n provided with two doors so that the earth can pass down the centre branch to re-fill the trench or be diverted to the sides. For use on grassland, cutting knives or discs p are provided in front of a plough q which removes the strip of turf. Steering of the machine is effected by a pivoted roller h controlled by a hand-wheel h<4>.
