Abstract

666,236. Sliver-balling machines. SACOLOWELL SHOPS. Nov. 5, 1948 [Sept. 4, 1948], No. 28840. Class 120(i) A sliver balling machine comprises a rotary drum for revolving a ball by surface contact, a support for holding the ball in contact with the drum, separate means including a presser foot resting on the ball for guiding a sliver into position to be wound on the ball, mechanism for relatively traversing the presser foot and the drum, and means acting through the support to hold the ball yieldingly but firmly pressed against the drum, as the ball builds up. As shown, Fig. 3, a single drum 2 drives a number of balls 3 spaced along the machine. Each ball 3 is wound on a tubular core 6 supported on a sleeve 7 rotatable in ball bearings on a shaft 10 carried by an arm 11 pivoted at 13. Arm 11 is engaged at the pivot by adjustably spring-pressed friction discs which offer constant resistance to upward movement of arm 11 as the ball grows, and thus serve to press the ball against drum 2. A sliver S is led to each balling head through a horn 28, one or more times around a rod 30 and through a tapered guideway in a presser foot 29 which rests on the surface of the ball. The sliver is thereby guided along a curved path such that no straight length of sliver longer than the fibre length is placed under tension. Each assembly 28, 29, 30 is pivotally carried by a bracket 31, all such brackets being secured to a sleeve 32 which is reciprocated on a rod 33 to traverse each sliver on its ball so as to produce a cross-winding. Reciprocation of sleeve 32 is effected by means of a sprocket wheel 38, Fig. 4, geared to the shaft 5 of drum 2, which sprocket engages pins 37 on a cross-head 34 connected by a rod 47 to a bracket 48 on sleeve 32.
